Swiftwater Rescue is considered one of the most difficult and dangerous rescue disciplines.  Throwing a boat in the mix makes it even more dangerous.

 

M.A.R. offers 3 boat courses to prepare departments for flood and swiftwater boat response.

 

Topics covered include: water rescue environments, hydrology as it pertains to boat operations, boat and motor care, boat handling, personnel assignments, rescue tactics and more.  

Boat Ops

Basic Boat Operator

​

The basic boat operator course is designed to prepare departments that operate a rescue boat with the necessary skills to be safe and succesful in floodwater environments.

 

This course is offered in a 2 day format scheduled to your departments needs.  

 

 

2 Day Course

 

Day 1

Morning - Powerpoint presentation covering the basics of boat operations including, standards, hazards, safety, boat types, outboard types, maintenance, water rescue enviroment, hydrology, training, support, operating guidelines and more.  

Afternoon - Boat tear down and maintanence, patching and repairs, motor maintenance and repairs, field repairs, and more

 

Day 2

Flatwater operations in a lake or local water way. Students learn basic boat handling, high and low speed manuevers, safety, crew assignments and responsibilites, communication, victim recovery, boat recovery, towing, crew excersizes and scenarios.

This class qualifies the student for the Basic Swiftwater Boat Operator Day 3 at a later time.

Basic Swiftwater Boat Operator 

 

The basic swiftwater boat operator course is designed to prepare departments that operate a rescue boat with the necessary skills to be safe and succesful in floodwater and swiftwater environments.

 

This course is offered in a 3 day format scheduled to your departments needs.  

 

 

3 Day Course

 

Day 1

Morning - Powerpoint presentation covering the basics of boat operations including, standards, hazards, safety, boat types, outboard types, maintenance, water rescue enviroment, hydrology, training, support, operating guidelines and more.

Day 2

Flatwater operations in a lake or local water way. Students learn basic boat handling, high and low speed manuevers, safety, crew assignments and responsibilites, communication, victim recovery, boat recovery, towing, crew excersizes and scenarios. 

 

Day 1 and 2 are completed at your location. 

 

Day 3

All in moving water, skills covered are current angles and boat operations, station keeping, confined area turns, eddy catching and exiting, victim pick ups, boat recovery, emergency operations and more.

 

Day 3 is in Oklahoma City at the Riversport Rapids facility.

Advanced Boat Operator

 

The advanced boat operator course is designed to prepare departments that operate a rescue boat with the necessary skills to be safe and succesful in swiftwater environments.

 

This course is offered in a 1 day format scheduled to your departments needs.  

 

 

1 Day Course with Flex Times

 

Day 1

Morning - Review of BSBO skills and turbulent water operations.  Victim recovery with a rescue swimmer from watercraft.  Advanced hydraulic negotiation and boat handling skills will all be tested during the first part of Day 1.

​

Class will then break for an early dinner, and will reconvene at approximately 7pm for night operations and search techniques. 

 

This class is recommended for those who  

excel as a boat operator.

 

NOTE* an additional day may be needed for personnel  who have not taken a boat course in over 1 year.

This course is in OKC at the Riversport Rapids facility.

Swiftwater Rescue

First Responder​

Water Rescue Awareness

​

This one-day course prepares those emergency professionals who arrive first on scene to assist in a water rescue.

Water rescue is one of the most dangerous and dynamic rescue situations first responders encounter. Participants will learn response concepts, hydrology and water characteristics, hazards, incident command, rescue tactics, shore based rescue operations, personal protective equipment and medical considerations.  

​

This course is a half day powerpoint presentation and half day hands on field exercise.

First Responder Water Rescue Operations 

 

This three-day course offers a comprehensive overview of response concepts, hydrology and water characteristics, hazards, rope throwing, rescue tactics, shore based rescue operations, rescue equipment, and medical considerations.  

 

Day 1 is a combination of classroom based theory and land-based skills.

 

Day 2 participants will get on the flatwater to test these theories and advance new skills.

 

Day 3 participants will hone their skills in a swiftwater environment on the RIVERSPORT Rapids.

First Responder Water Rescue Technician

Civilian or Professional

Community Response to Water Rescue

​

This course reviews proper safety at a FLOOD incident by providing an overview of specific rescue situations and necessary precautions. Participants will learn the importance of scene safety and how to identify general hazards.  This classroom-based awareness class is designed for citizens and community leaders who require the skills necessary to recognize and support a floodwater incident. This class does not provide any training to manage or implement a floodwater rescue plan.

Water Event Safety and Rescue Awareness

 

 

This course is designed for professionals whose job requires work around water.  Students will learn response concepts, hydrology and water characteristics, hazards, incident command, rescue tactics, shore based rescue operations, personal protective equipment and medical considerations.

​

This course is detailed to work related tasks and covers self rescue and crew rescue techniques.  It is a highly customizable course that can include in-water training.

GPS Search and Rescue for Water Events

​

Students in this class will learn the importance of GPS waypoint and tracking use.  Students will get a GPS overview, land exercises, water exercises and get a look at the overall picture of how important the use of the GPS is.  This class can be extended for overnight operations.

Night Operations for Water Rescue

 

 

 

 

This course is designed to give students and orientation to night operations at a water rescue incident.  Students will have an opportunity to practice basic skills during night operations in flat and moving water.  Students will work on search scenarios, incident command, rescue operations and safety during this overnight course.  

​

The course pre-requisite is swiftwater rescue technician.  

​
